We met in a Sydney church and were sent by CMS to Central Tanzania for 12 years with our three sons from 1992 to 2003. There we worked in Berega Hospital and Mvumi Mission Hospital. Later in Dodoma, Michael served in the Provincial office of the Anglican Church of Tanzania, and Jean worked with a local HIV program.
In 2022 we made an enquiry to CMS regarding short-term opportunities in medical education ministry in East Africa, as we both hold PhDs and have tertiary teaching experience. Soon afterwards we learnt of a corresponding request for assistance to set up post-graduate training in family medicine – a matter of God’s timing as we already speak Swahili, the national language of Tanzania, and have experienced Tanzanian ways of life.
In God’s providence, we have been invited back to Tanzania to help establish a new model of Christian medical education for family medicine in Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, Moshi, Tanzania. Michael will assist to establish a post-graduate training program for family medicine in Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College, and Jean will explore other serving options on location. The medical students will come from Tanzania and neighbouring countries. Our hope is that educating future doctors will provide opportunities to introduce and disciple them to grow in relationship with their Creator, and in so doing to better care for their patients.
We know this ministry can only be done in partnership with others. We need partners to pray for us and this ministry, for support and encouragement, and financial support, and for other family medicine educators to join us.
