Good timing leads to new opportunities

CMS missionary J* serving in the Middle East, where Ramadan (the fasting month of the majority religion) and Eid, the celebration that follows, are observed. J* shares how the timing of Ramadan and Eid overlapped with Easter earlier this year, giving her opportunities to share the good news with people.  

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

1 Peter 1:3

The overlap of Ramadan and Easter offered some natural opportunities to share the Easter story as we broke the fast and celebrated Eid with friends.  

One of my neighbour’s kids heard the Easter story for the first time. “Jesus died?!” he exclaimed in shock.  

Please pray that the children who heard the story will remain curious about Christianity and keep asking questions. 

An unexpected reception 

Another opportunity that the timing of Eid provided was with my cleaner, Ayat*. I visited Ayat and her family several times during Ramadan. On the Easter weekend, I asked them if I could share the story of our Eid: Easter. To my surprise, they replied enthusiastically – “We want to hear the story!” 

And so, Ayat, her sisters, and all of their kids gathered around me. One sister’s husband even stayed to listen too. With quite some difficulty (my Arabic is not yet fluent) and plenty of help from props, charades, and my audience’s assistance with language, I told the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection.  

As many people in my location don’t believe that Jesus died, I was expecting some push-back. But to my surprise, they listened enthusiastically and even finished my sentences for me when I stumbled along in my broken Arabic. By the end of the story, the whole room was shouting: “Al-Massih qam (Christ is risen)! Hakam qam (He is risen indeed)!”  

Praise God for such a reception. He works in people’s hearts, even when we least expect it! 

PRAY

Pray for the families that J* has been able to witness to. Pray that they will continue to embrace the good news enthusiastically, and that J* can encourage them as they explore faith.
