Farming God’s way

CMS missionary Anna Radkovic serves with A Rocha Kenya, a Christian conservation organisation which points people to Jesus through caring for creation. Anna and some members of the A Rocha team recently attended a Christian farming course which taught sustainable farming practices guided by biblical truths. Here, she shares her reflections from the course:

Highlights from the course

A few months ago, four of us from A Rocha travelled to Kijabe for the ‘Farming God’s Way’ course–a regenerative farming program taught from biblical foundations. It was great fun, and probably the best teaching I’ve heard for integrating theology with practical action! We spent the week reading the Bible, considering the state of the environment in Kenya, looking at our responsibility for the earth as God’s people, praying together, and planting crops.

The most powerful part was when we knelt down after preparing the field for planting, held the soil in our hands and prayed over it. We repented of any bloodshed or evil that may have occurred on that land and entrusted that, from here on, while the land was in our care as God’s people, it would be managed and cared in a way that brought God glory. It was a great moment!

Measuring knowledge against Biblical truths

One of my favourite parts of the course was when a Verreaux’s Eagle Owl was brought in. Owls are deeply feared in many parts of the world, including Kenya, as messengers of death. When the group was asked if owls bring death, almost everyone in the group said, “yes, of course they do.” Many shared stories of when, they believe, owls had brought death to people they knew. We had a great discussion about the owl as one of God’s created creatures, which was designed for good, not evil. We discussed the power of Jesus over death, and how we must measure everything we know–or think we know–against the truth of God’s Word. All with this big ol’ owl perched on the teacher’s arm! It was very cool.

Farming to glorify God

I was excited and encouraged to see the young lads from A Rocha inspired to farm in a way that honours God and to help others do the same. They’ve already started implementing what they learnt with the vulnerable Dakatcha Woodland farming communities. The people living in the Dakatcha Woodland area need to know Jesus as Lord, even more than they need food for their children. One of these needs is temporary, and one lasts forever. Pray that hearts, as well as farming techniques, are changed for God’s glory.

PRAY

Give thanks for the sound biblical teaching in the ‘Farming God’s Way’ course, which equipped Anna and members of the A Rocha team to care for farmers around Dakatcha. Pray that hearts and lives would be transformed by these gospel truths, far beyond the helpful methods of regenerative farming.
