The following prayer points are in a secure format to protect missionaries in sensitive locations. This means that some names have been removed, so they are best read in conjunction with the CMS Prayer Diary which is available from your local branch.

October 2019 Prayer Points

Tuesday 1 – Argentina

Martin & Julie Field pray for a planned trip to the north of the country, that it would encourage the student groups in that area. Peter & Terry Blowes pray for the ABUA Buenos Aires Mark Drama. Pray that many non-Christians will attend, and that all who participate will be challenged and strengthened in their faith. Amy Stephens thanks God for rest and encouragement on home assignment and prays for a good transition back to Argentina later this month.

Wednesday 2 – Mexico, Bolivia & Peru

Peter & Sarah Sholl pray for Sarah as she has weekly meetings with two women to train them in preparing and leading Bible studies. Adrian & Anita Lovell give thanks for the opportunity to get back into face-to-face MOCLAM ministry, and pray for safety and good outcomes in the upcoming elections. Give thanks to God with Nick & Kysha Davies for a recent conference with pastors and leaders from all over Peru where they worked through the Pentateuch in Old Testament 1. Grahame & Patty Scarratt pray that God provide for their administrator to work more hours. Pedro & Joy Oliveira Woolmer give thanks for new mission partners who have joined their support team, and pray for the safe arrival of their second child, due in early November.

Thursday 3 – Chile

Chris & Stef Overhall pray that God would use them for his glory as they serve in Sunday school, Bible study and youth group. Pray that their visa would be granted. Michael & Jo Charles pray for CEP enrolments for next year, that God will provide new students. Pray that the church will raise up new leaders to serve in gospel ministry. Gary & Julie Haddon give thanks for their CMS pastoral visit and a lovely visit from friends during September. They pray for energy for their girls, as this is a particularly demanding time at school. Frances Cook prays for the National Anglican Youth Congress (in which some CEP students will be playing a part) that God will use it to build up his Church in love and knowledge of him.

Friday 4 – Ethiopia, Kenya & Tanzania

Shane & Naomi Rubie pray for stability in Ethiopia. Pray for wisdom and safety for the Prime Minister and for the rest of the government. Roger & Lynn Kay thank God for the privilege of serving with CMS in Ethiopia and seeing lives transformed. Praise God for the care they have received from CMS through the joys and challenges. Maggie Crewes gives thanks for the appointment of a new country director for their Ethiopian program. Pray for him as he becomes part of their team and learns the work. Norm & Janelle Gorrie give thanks for the Leadership Resources preaching workshop on Genesis.

Saturday 5 – Tanzania

Arthur & Tamie Davis pray for student leaders to communicate the vision of TAFES well to incoming first year students. Glen & Dominique Turner pray that the outreach event being held at their church this month would bear fruit for the gospel. Kevin & Karen Flanagan give thanks for a teaching safari in a refugee area and pray that what was taught will produce lasting fruit. Pray with Judith Calf for the evangelists who have arrived this week for a two-month refresher course. May God’s Spirit grow them in his word and equip them for ministry. Mike & Katie Taylor pray for their students from low education backgrounds, that they would adapt well to the college system and have a fruitful learning experience. Liz Burns prays for God to be teaching his people more about who he is and what he has done for them.

Sunday 6 – Namibia, South Africa & DR Congo

Mike & Karen Roe pray their visa applications would be approved quickly and smoothly this month. Daniel & Olivia Webster pray for Dan to be faithful, relational, and positive as he receives more opportunities to do good. Kylie Zietsch praises God for continued growth in the students, especially with their preaching and Bible study leading skills. Please pray also for the college accreditation process to be successful. Nathan & Diane Lovell pray for Diane as she leads two different Friday Forum sessions at GWC this month. David & Prue Boyd pray for the Bible School students as they attend another module this month, that they will be able to understand and apply what they learn. Graham & Wendy Toulmin give thanks for encouraging times with link churches and support groups, and pray for a good transition back to Aru. As they revisit parishes they have been a part of in the past, Andrew & Margie Newman give thanks to God for the encouragement of seeing his faithful, long-term work in people.

Monday 7 – Development & Training

SAH: D & J pray that discussions with the bishop about language learning arrangements will go smoothly. A & A give thanks for God’s hand at work during the last couple of months. C & J pray for both themselves and for their adult sons during this time of transition for their family. R & S pray for discernment in direction as they interview for positions in international churches. D & C give thanks for a fruitful and refreshing time at St Andrew’s Hall, and pray that a planned deputation trip to the US in December would be able to go ahead. E thanks God for all the amazing things she is learning. Pray that she would continue to learn through class and the assignments as well as retain the information once she is on location. Mentac: Give thanks for the ministry of the ReachOut conference at Katoomba in September, and pray that connections made there will lead to new Mentac apprentices. Pray for fruitful gospel connections with Lakemba locals.

Tuesday 8 – South East Asia

H & M pray for good preparation for Home Assignment. I praises God for a relatively smooth transition back to location and prays for a teaching semester full of meaningful interactions with students about life and faith. J & I give thanks for the progress with international student ministry through their church, and pray for spiritual growth amongst all in their Growth Group. T & E give thanks for a good start to their time in Tasmania. Pray that their time with churches is a mutual blessing. J asks that she would receive additional strength in the lead-up to mid-term exams, with preparation of exam papers and finalisation of assessment items. Please pray with K for comfort, strength and trust for her family as they deal with a family member’s illness. Pray for guidance for the path forward.

Wednesday 9 – South East Asia

M & L pray for a bilingual Bible study for local young professionals to continue to be a place where people are transformed by God’s word. N & R pray for comfort and strength as Margaret cares for her dying mum, Elizabeth, and give thanks to God for both Margaret and Elizabeth’s trust in his provision. S prays for opportunities for believers to share about Jesus, who is the light of the world, and for people to be open to hear and respond to the good news. Na prays for God to be at work in her location, drawing people to himself. Ne thanks God for his living and active word at work in the lives of local people, and prays that God would continue to teach his people through his word.

Thursday 10 – Cambodia

Bethany Vaughan gives thanks for her new role at school as the ‘talk therapist’, which comes with the opportunity to talk and pray with students. Wim & Maaike Prins thank God for their time in the Netherlands for Wim’s Mum’s funeral. Pray that they’d take the opportunity to grieve in a godly way and be ministered to by the father of mercies and the God of all comfort. Craig & Samantha McCorkindale pray for the teachers and students at the Bible school as they restart another year. Give thanks that Craig’s subject is being covered while he is away. Dave & Leoni Painter give thanks for God’s provision of a house to rent and settle in, before the Bible School term starts. Andrew & Liz Glover pray that they would continue to lean heavily on God for wisdom and direction

Friday 11 – Indonesia, Singapore & Timor-Leste

Alan & Helen Wood praise God for new small groups starting up and thank God for two refugees being relocated through private sponsorship. R prays for peace and healing for the people of his location, and for wisdom for the President and his new government as they respond to many complex issues and needs. J & D pray for opportunities to share the gospel and that God would open hearts and minds to the truth. Marty & Jenny Foord pray for the faculty at ETC Asia, that they would be faithful, kind, and loving to each other and the students. Chris & Grace Adams pray for Grace as she prepares to deliver their second child. Pray for good health and energy for Grace and baby, as well as for Micah and Chris. N & R give thanks for recent holidays with family.

Chris & Karen Webb thank God for the opportunity they had to get together with other families serving in the diocese at a recent conference. Matt & Lisa Pearson give thanks for a church faithfully proclaiming the gospel to the next generation. Tavis & Kate Beer pray for safe travel and fruitful times during their anticipated remote trips later this month. Derek & Rosemary Snibson pray for the people attending the Bible study at the Rehabilitation Centre, that they will grow in their love of Jesus and understanding of the Bible. Wayne Oldfield & Mandy Jones pray for the Nungalinya board as they set directions for the college, particularly in relation to language development and curriculum. Ian & Jenny Wood praise God for 100 years of gospel ministry celebrated at Wentworthville Anglican Church, their home church in Sydney.

Sunday 13 – North Australia, PNG & Vanuatu

Matt & Kate Vinicombe pray for a helpful pastoral visit from their Regional Mission Director and for a refreshing time on annual leave. Keith & Marion Birchley pray for the students as they finish their exams and head back to their villages. Joel & Tiffanie Atwood pray for a strong finish to the university year and for leaders to be raised up to shepherd others.

Monday 14 – UAE & Jordan

K prays for ongoing and new Japanese contacts, and for open hearts to respond to the good news. J & D pray for the impact of a large outside event and for good follow-up. Give thanks to God with W & C for W’s trip to train leaders in an expat church. Malcolm & Charissa give thanks for all the new people coming to church. M & O give thanks to God for an encouraging visit overseas, and pray that they would rest in God as they prepare to move.

Tuesday 15 – Middle East

J asks for God’s wisdom, grace and leading as her household considers moving to a new area and project. L prays for godly wisdom and courage as she and her team make the decision about where to serve next year. S & P pray that the family would settle into their ‘new normal’, for an established routine for their children, and to find a church family. L & I pray for the staff of SAH as they plan and prepare for the temporary relocation of St Andrew’s Hall.

Wednesday 16 – Middle East

S & C pray for the new students at the College to settle into the routine of study, and to feel a part of the community. M praises God for her lovely neighbours. Pray that she can get to know them at a deeper level while drinking chai with them in the evenings. C prays for opportunities to pray simple prayers in Arabic with local friends. B praises God for the opening of a new English Centre in her town, and prays that it would be an environment for meaningful discussion.

Thursday 17 – Nepal

K & M L pray for God’s gospel to be clearly proclaimed to those who need to hear it. I & R pray that Nepali Christians would keep meeting together to encourage one another in Christ. D & E praise God for young and enthusiastic new staff, and pray for E’s mum, who is back in hospital. J prays that God’s light will shine in her location, and that people will realise the freedom that they can embrace as a member of his kingdom.

Friday 18 – Nepal & Pakistan

K (& B) pray for this festival season, for them as they spend time with their family in the village, and for the church there during the festival days. B & L give thanks for the completion of the chapel and pray that all who enter the hospital will find true rest and peace. G & R give thanks for the regular Marriage Enrichment courses that their Nepali church runs and pray for loving and strong marriages for Nepali Christians. L & T pray for Christians as they navigate the upcoming Tihar festival celebrated by their Hindu friends and relatives. Pray for opportunities to show God’s love. S prays that she would grow more like Christ in her daily interactions. D & S pray for God to continue the monthly meetings of women from the majority faith discussing belief and how it intersects with life.

Saturday 19 – South Asia

E prays she would have a soft heart, listening to and obeying the Father. S (& T) ask that God would strengthen their marriage as they serve together. Pray with K that God would give her and her housemates love and wisdom to practice generous and sustainable hospitality. L prays for God’s presence, comfort, and grace in the challenge of transition back to South Asia this month. Ask God with M & K for wisdom and patience as they settle into their new town. Pray that God would provide a flat with neighbours who are open to the gospel, and who have children for their son S to be friends with. S & I pray for God to draw South Asian majority believers to Christ. A prays for refreshing holidays with family and for God’s ongoing work during the remaining few months of deputation.

Sunday 20 – CMS Australia

Pray for the staff of CMS Australia. Pray that they would be encouraged to serve the missionaries of CMS pastorally, prayerfully and practically. Pray that they can create a workplace culture that is built on Christlikeness and that demonstrates a joy in the work of making the gospel known.

Monday 21 – France

Please pray with Caroline Evenden for good final preparations to return to Australia, including farewells with GBU staff and students, and at church. Daniel & Kate Morris pray that, as the new academic year gets going, that Bible study groups will settle into a good rhythm and that group members continue to invite people. Give thanks to God with Josh & Susannah Apieczonek for keen student leaders, and pray for their maturity and growth in godliness. Colin & Catherine Puffet pray for an international student ministry at their church, that many students would come and join their international bilingual service. Kelly Landrigan gives thanks for a recent visit from some Aussie friends. M prays that she would get better at memorising stories from the Bible and that, as she shares them, people would be drawn to Jesus.

Tuesday 22 – Italy, Ireland & Malta

Simon & Jessica Cowell pray for GBU Foggia and GBU Bari, that they would continue to meet while the Cowells are on Home Assignment. Gillian Law thanks God for the start of the new academic year and prays for faithfulness and dependence on God. Naomi Brunacci prays for the new students who have joined groups, that they’d build good friendships with other students so that together they can proclaim Christ on campus. Erin Moorcroft gives thanks for all the annual Harvest Services, School Services and Diocesan Synod this month, and prays they will all be used for his glory. Geoff & Robyn pray that Geoff will be a good husband and Dad, not letting ministry consume quality family time.

Wednesday 23 – Austria, Germany & Slovenia

Rob & Arabelle Horne pray for a good transition back to Australia and final Home Assignment, and pray for open doors for long-term future ministry. Rachel Gibbs prays the students would be motivated and bold to share their faith with their peers. Mimy Gardner prays that she would consistently talk to God first about her concerns for others. Klaus & Jude Hickel pray that the gospel of grace would sink in and transform the lives of those in their church. Pray with Kingsley & Veronica Box that they would be committed to prayer and learning daily from God’s word.

Thursday 24 – Spain & Eurasia

With Jim & Tanja French, please pray for Evie and Silas as they continue to learn Valèncian and Spanish at school. Mike & Tania Snowdon pray that university students would lift their eyes to what Jesus is doing in the whole world and so be more bold locally. John & Jodi Lovell give thanks for those publicly confirming their faith in the Lord Jesus this month. R asks for the completion of the Russian translation of the Moore College Certificate subjects. Pray with Miriam Bradshaw, that she will keep depending on her Heavenly Father.

Friday 25 – Hong Kong, Taiwan & East Asia

Ian & Narelle Hadfield thank God for their first month of ministry in Singapore. Sam & Shan-Shan Chrisp pray that their family can keep growing together from God’s word each week. S & K pray that God might strengthen and encourage local believers to continue to walk in his ways and draw near to him in times of suffering. L prays for good energy and rest during travel this month.

Saturday 26 – East Asia

D & T give thanks that there are many opportunities for T’s team to take up, and pray for wisdom for which ones to accept. E gives thanks for a lovely new tutor. Pray that the teacher’s good discipline would be a great help to E’s language learning. D & L praise God that there are men to train and for their humility to learn. Pray that these men would grow in maturity and have courage and confidence to serve. L & J pray for culture change in their international fellowship so that every member is motivated, equipped and available to share the gospel.

Sunday 27 – Japan

Pray with Adam & Helane Ramsay that God would bless their preparation for Christmas events, and that they would have lots of opportunities to share the hope that Jesus brings. Steven & Sandra Parsons pray for refreshment and encouragement in the Lord for ladies attending a retreat this week, organised by Sandra. Roger & Noriko Dethlefs give thanks for deepening friendships enjoyed at the Eifuku-Minami church retreat, and for God’s mercies in passing a language exam. Nathan & Maki Clapham pray for students as they prepare for Christmas events. Chenny Thie prays for KGK’s Kanto mission month and for her talk about world mission last week, that it would have impacted people positively. Matt & Jen Lim also pray that Eifuku-Minami’s church retreat earlier this month would encourage the congregation members to grow in their relationship with the Lord through his word.

Dene & Rachel Hughes pray that the Bible Adventure Parenting Seminar would be well attended and useful. Kellie Nicholas gives thanks for the campus groups that have started well and prays that students will make meeting up together a priority in their busy schedules. Brad & Michelle Jackson pray for the children in their Sunday school classes, that they would come to know Jesus as their saviour and Lord. Pray with Dave & Beck McIntyre as they start the second half of church visiting this week. Pray that they can encourage people to raise their eyes to see God’s work in the world.

Give thanks for the many CMS partners who work hard to see God’s kingdom proclaimed in their contexts. Pray that they would be supported well in prayer and giving, and that they would serve faithfully in order to see Jesus known. Give thanks for the opportunity to partner with these godly men and women in this way.

Wednesday 30 – CMS Branches

NSW & ACT Praise God for the appointment of John Lovell as the new General Secretary of CMS NSW & ACT. Pray for John, Jodi and their children as they prepare to leave Spain and begin this new season of life and ministry. QNNSW Pray for their summer school conference preparations. Ask that God will raise up leaders for the children’s and youth program. SANT Pray for godly wisdom for the CMS SANT Branch Candidates Committee as they interview applicants for cross-cultural work. Please pray that the process would be helpful for the applicant families as they discern whether cross-cultural work with CMS is a good fit for the long-term. TAS Pray for preparations for the November AGM and Mission Lunch, and for SummerView, particularly the keynote speakers, Simon Gillham, Grishma Parajuli and missionaries. Also pray for T&E back on Home Assignment from SE Asia as they reconnect with family, friends, churches and individual supporters. VIC Pray for their upcoming AGM in mid-November, that the right people attend and that they can inspire their supporters with their new branch vision. WA Praise God for raising up new missionaries in WA. Please pray that he would provide them with partner churches.

Wednesday 31 – Former Missionaries Fellowship

With the Former Missionaries’ Fellowship, we praise God for the life of Colin Tunbridge, who died on 11 August, aged 84. Colin and his late wife Dorothy served the Lord with CMS in South America (1965-76) with a focus on ministry to students and later was the rector of two Canberra parishes. We praise God for the life of Tony Nichols, who died on 24 August, aged 81. Tony and his wife Judith served the Lord with CMS in Indonesia (1972-81) and at Nungalinya College, Darwin, (1982-87) before he became the Principal of St Andrew’s Hall (1987-92). He was the Bishop of North West Australia from 1992 to 2003. We pray for Judith and all their family.
