Christ and conservation
CMS missionary Anna Radkovic serves with A Rocha Kenya, a Christian conservation organisation that seeks to make Jesus known through practical care for God’s world. In this article, Anna introduces us to three of her colleagues—Lenar, Patricia and Rukia.
I have the awesome privilege of working alongside some truly remarkable women at A Rocha Kenya. Each of these co-workers play a key role in getting alongside people to share the gospel and delight in the Creator through community work, environmental education, research and hospitality.
Meet Lenar

Leading the education team is Lenar.
You will often find Lenar quietly working in her office at A Rocha, but she comes alive in the classroom—inspiring kids to understand and care for creation. Her whole body lights up as she explains the role of pollinators in the ecosystem at the front of the classroom! It is very cool to see the kids get excited in response.
Lenar doesn’t just teach—she mentors the kids in her classes, listening to their stories and sharing Christ with them. The children she works with are in some of the poorest schools in Kenya with very few resources. She doesn’t see this as a job, but as a calling from God.
Lenar’s passion for the Creator and creation is a gift to these kids—she is able to give them a hope that is worth living for in an area where life is very difficult.
Meet Patricia

Patricia joined the A Rocha team last year for her ‘IServe Africa’ placement. ‘IServe’ is a gap year program of intentional ministry. Patricia was placed in the community conservation team, where she works in administration for A Rocha’s school bursary and mentorship program.
But it is in A Rocha’s informal ministry that she has found her passion. A Rocha is a non-government organisation, but it is also an intentional Christian community that all are welcomed into, regardless of faith background. Every Sunday, a group of believers meet at
A Rocha to sing praise to God, pray and read the Bible together.
Patricia was asked to lead the Sunday school—which is something she had never done before—and discovered a passion for teaching children the Bible. She loved it so much that she began two other programs for the kids around her village.
Her love for God’s Word and Jesus keeps growing and spilling out into all her free time. What a woman!
Meet Rukia

Rukia was the first one who invited me along to her church. She is the happiest person to greet everyone each morning—bursting with joy in life and in Christ. She loves working for a Christian workplace where we read the Bible, pray, eat and do the dishes together—everyone from the director to the new volunteer.
Rukia is A Rocha’s housekeeper, and she makes every bed and cleans every floor for the glory of God—singing and dancing with a big smile on her face. Her life is not easy, but her life is full
of joy because she is living for Christ.
Praise God for each of these women, and their faithful service to the Lord!
