Unlike many of its neighbours, Thailand maintained its autonomy in the colonial era. Its relative stability has meant that many from troubled surrounding countries, such as Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar (Burma), have sought refuge within its borders.
In recent times, Thailand’s economy has struggled. The country has also experienced problems with corruption, drug trafficking and trade in illegal weapons. The one year mourning period for the late king finished towards the end of 2017 and his son was crowned the new king.
