CMS Prayer Focus

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” – Luke 10:2

Prayer is essential for God’s mission and for CMS. It is a privilege that reminds us of how desperately we need God, how worthy he is of our praise, and how faithfully he works in our lives and our world.

CMS Prayer Focus is a dedicated time of prayer for CMS missionaries and God’s gospel work through CMS. We’d love you and your church / small group / family to pick a week and dedicate it to prayer for mission through CMS.

Through Prayer Focus, you will receive resources to help you pray for God’s mission around the world. There are resources for church services, small groups, youth groups and for dedicated prayer events.

Who are the gospel-poor and why should we pray for them?

CMS seeks to reach people groups who have limited or no opportunity to hear the good news of Jesus Christ in their own language and cultural context without outside help.

The CMS criterion for “gospel-poor peoples” is people groups with less than 2% evangelical Christians, regardless of the percentage of Christian adherents. It is therefore possible for some people groups to be considered ‘reached’ but still be gospel-poor.

For example, the French people are 0.9% evangelical Christians but 67% Christian adherents. They are not classified as an unreached people group using the Joshua Project definitions because of the high percentage of Christian adherents. However, our experience of mission in regions like this, is that people will not hear the good news of Jesus Christ without outside help.
