Jasmine follows Christ

CMS missionary B, serving in the Middle East, meets her friend Jasmine* each week to pray and read the Bible. Here she speaks of Jasmine’s life as a new Christian, and how God has honoured her perseverance in the face of financial and family difficulties.
Walking alongside Jasmine, a new sister with whom I (and fellow CMS worker C) meet once or twice a week, has been one of my greatest joys.
We have been reading through John and praying together. She has become a follower of Jesus within the past 12-18 months, and it has been beautiful to see evidence of the Spirit’s work in her life. Since meeting Jesus, she has a deep joy and hope despite very difficult circumstances, and is growing in confidence and godliness.
Recently her family members questioned her about the source of her happiness—is there someone in her life? She responded by saying “Yes, I have met someone who has changed my life… and I pray that you would meet this person too!”
I’m truly thankful for my weekly times of fellowship with Jasmine. I marvel at her persistent hope within difficult circumstances, and am encouraged by her hunger for knowing God’s word. Several weeks ago we had an intimate, joyful gathering to celebrate her baptism. None of her family or neighbours know about her faith, and we have had a few conversations about the potential consequences should they find out. I am praying, and asking others to pray, that she will have God’s strength to resist any temptation to deny Christ.
“Yes, I have met someone who has changed my life… and I pray that you would meet this person too!”
Jasmine’s other personal circumstances are difficult. Recently Jasmine’s husband was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that causes eye pain and loss of vision. This makes it difficult for him to work, exacerbating their poor financial situation and adding to his feelings of hopelessness and frustration. Jasmine feels the weight of family responsibilities and seeks to maintain hope and be a Christ-like example.
God at work
Through all this the gospel has continued to make progress in and around Jasmine.
In one such story, Jasmine’s brother Raheem* has been experiencing injustice at his work (a roadside coffee hut) and was even imprisoned for a few weeks earlier this year. Amazingly, over the past few months a gas-bottle delivery man, Abu Alagadi*, of the local Christian-background minority, has befriended Raheem. Abu Alagadi has shared with Jasmine’s brother from the Bible and has been praying for him.
How wonderfully God continues to work in answer to prayer, even (and especially) when times are difficult!

B asks that we pray for the whole household and Jasmine’s extended family, and that Jasmine will continue to bear fruit and grow in her knowledge of God.
