Equipping leaders to serve the nations
Posted on: 3rd December 2021
CMS missionaries John and Deb serve at a large international church. Deb shares how training and equipping men and women for gospel ministry is an essential part of their church’s work.
Despite international delays and restrictions due to COVID-19, our church now has apprentices for the 2021/22 ministry year. Two women and five men from all around the globe (South Asia, Africa, Latin America and Great Britain) have joined our church to be trained, equipped and mentored in ministry.
Value of small groups
An important component in our church’s pastoral and teaching ministry are the 2:42¹ Bible study groups. Learning to lead groups and train leaders is part of the training our interns receive.
We teach them to use the COMA method (Context, Observation, Meaning, Application) when studying the Bible and encourage them to ask questions about and reflect on the text being studied.
Value of training
I have been supervising Alejandra* as a 2:42 ministry intern. Alejandra is from Latin America where she has been working with the local branch of an international mission organisation.
She has been doing an amazing job here and is now training others and connecting people with 2:42 groups. We have 40 new 2:42 leaders who are currently being trained! Alejandra is also a native Spanish speaker which, given the multicultural nature of our city, has proved very useful.
Recently we had a wonderful morning studying Hebrews 10 with one of our Spanish groups. As I spoke, Alejandra translated for the women in the group. Following the talk, the group leaders took the initiative to talk and pray with some of the women who had attended. After the meeting, three women came to faith! I was deeply encouraged. One thing that was special and helped the women to respond, was hearing God’s word in their heart language, Spanish. Alejandra, who had translated for me throughout the meeting, was exhausted, but very happy, afterwards.
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)

1. The Bible study groups at John and Deb’s church are called 2:42 groups in reference to Acts 2:42 – “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
There are opportunities to serve in church-based ministries in every region where CMS works. Do you have ministry training and experience? Perhaps you could serve in an area where there are fewer workers. Get in touch with your local CMS branch to talk about opportunities.
