Gospel connections in unexpected places

CMS workers seek to share God’s love wherever they are, whatever they are doing. One of our workers, C, reflects on some unexpected gospel connections she made when she visited her brother in Iceland in December 2020.

What a strange 12 months it has been. I have faced many new challenges, and God has been teaching and growing me through them. Late last year I was notified of a change in COVID travel lawsand suddenly it was possible for me to fly to Iceland (where my brother lives) and surprise him there for his birthday! It was a wonderful answer to prayer to be able to have a decent break with him and his family over Christmas.

I was also thankful to discover that there are some Syrian refugees living in Iceland! Just a few, but I made it my priority to meet some of them.

A local mentor

Firstly, I met a young guy who had only moved to Iceland in 2020. He is highly motivated to learn Icelandic, but because of COVID there have not been any classes running. I felt a lot of compassion for his situation. I can imagine how hard it would have been to arrive in the location where I serve and survive without knowing any language or community.

I shared his situation with an Icelandic believer, who in turn was able to connect this refugee with a believing Icelandic guy of similar age, working in the same professionThis is a huge answer to prayerI thank God for providing this mentoring connection for my refugee friend, and pray for this relationship to bear fruit for the kingdom.

Family connections

Secondly, I met a very warm and generous Syrian family who invited me to their home a few times. In God’s sovereignty, it turns out that the mother has four sisters living in the country where I normally work. I recently visited some of these families to deliver some gifts from their family in Iceland.

It was a joy to be a point of connection between these familiesI am praying for opportunities to develop these relationships, that we would honour them, listen well, and speak hope to their felt needs.
