Christianity Alongside Islam, John W Wilson, (Acorn Press, Melbourne, 2010)
Review by Paul Arnott, at the time State Director of CMS Victoria and Board member of Acorn Press
Christianity Alongside Islam by Bishop John Wilson, a Vice President of CMS, lays the Christian and Muslim faiths side by side.
The genesis of the book was John Wilson’s involvement in a small group at the 1998 Lambeth Conference, which included leaders from Nigeria, Uganda and South East Asia, all of whom spoke of the pressure, even persecution, that their churches were experiencing from Muslim extremists.
The book, which is hardcover and 410 pages long, covers a wide range of topics including Jesus and Mohammad in history, Holy Scripture, Jesus in the Bible and the Qur’an, Christianity and Islam as world religions, violence and peacemaking, faith and politics, and human rights.
The at the time Professorial Dean of the Bible College of Victoria’s Centre for the Study of Islam and Other Faiths, Dr Peter Riddell, writes of Christianity Alongside Islam: “Dr John Wilson’ s book succeeds in digesting a vast amount of information about both Christianity and Islam and presenting it in a way that is very accessible to non-speciality readers. The book is comprehensive in detail but very readable in style. Christianity Alongside Islam will undoubtedly assist the urgent task of informing Christians and non-Christian Westerners about Islam.”
