Summer School 2012

Modern Missionary Work – From Everywhere to Everywhere

Over 600 people from many local churches across Queensland and Northern NSW kick-started the year at ‘The Glory of God’ CMS Summer School January 2012, Tamborine Mountain – to hear inspirational Bible teaching and how CMS missionaries are making a difference in our modern world.

“Modern mission has been a tremendous success. Right now we are in one of the great moments in the history of mission,” said Rev Peter Rodgers, the incoming General Secretary of CMS Australia. “Countries that once received missionaries now send them. Countries that once sent missionaries now need them.”

“The new paradigm is mission everywhere to everywhere,” he said.

Rev Rodgers said that amidst the successes many challenges existed for modern missionary work around the world. In Africa and China over 15,000 people a day now come to know Christ, while in the post-Christian culture of Europe, people were not merely ignorant of Christianity but were disparaging of the Gospel, he said.

Even in countries with dramatic growth in Christianity, there is a strong need for missionaries to train local leaders in sound biblical theology, ethical practice and engagement with the community. International guest speaker Bishop Hilkiah Omindo Deya of, Tanzania, spoke passionately about the growing church in Tanzania and the challenges it faces.

He thanked CMS missionaries who work in Tanzania for training up local church leaders, and he thanked their CMS Australian supporters. He particularly talked about St John’s University in Dodoma, where CMS missionary Judy Lund (from Gunnedah Anglican church) has been serving and Malcolm and Elmari Buchanan (from Creek Road Presbyterian) serve. “Working with you – CMS members and supporters – our partners, we become more effective. The growth of the church in Tanzania is because of you.” Seven of CMS’s over 200 Australian missionaries work with him. Bishop Deya was greatly encouraged to meet people at Summer School from so many different parishes and age groups, keen to find out how CMS could serve their church in world mission.

Bible teaching at CMS Summer School was from the Old Testament book of Isaiah and delivered by Kanishka Raffel, Senior Minister, St Matthew's Shenton Park, Perth. He said, “We need people who serve God by communicating the gospel in their own heart language. After all you didn’t hear the gospel in first century Greek today, did you?” CMS works with churches in Australia to raise up missionaries who support the growth of local churches in 40 countries.

Missionaries Judy Lund (Tanzania), Bruce Hayes (Nepal), Lex Macqueen (Middle East), Paul and Helen (China) and Dene and Rachel Hughes (Japan) shared.

CMS Summer School 2012 reminded us that throughout the whole of the Bible, Old Testament included, God is concerned for people of all nations,” CMS Qld with Northern NSW General Secretary Jeremy Gehrmann said.

There is a desperate need for people to have hope in Jesus, for example in Japan, where only 0.2 % of the people attend a Christian church and 30K people commit suicide each year.

It was encouraging to see how many people from different Australian churches were keen to find out how CMS could serve their church in God’s world mission.

The youngest attender at Summer School 2012 was around 5 months and oldest 102 years. Plan to come next January 2013.
