General nurses are needed for an extensive eye care program based in South Asia; in a country with the second highest prevalence of blindness in the world.

The eye care program includes three major tertiary centres (40-50 beds) based in the major city centres, three smaller (5-10 beds) inpatient and surgical/treatment facilities in more remote areas, mobile surgical eye camps, training for doctors and ophthalmic technicians, primary eye care program, eye drop production pharmacies and optical centers, and logistical and supply centre.

General nurses are needed who are willing to function as/or grow into the following roles: nursing supervisors/administrators for the training, supervision, and upgrading of patient care in one of the four regional ophthalmic tertiary centres. All tertiary centres have 35-45 beds, busy operating theatres, and busy out patient departments. The position involves some nursing administration.
There will be orientation of new nurses to the ophthalmic aspects of nursing.

Requirements

• degree/certification as qualified nurse; two years work experience helpful but not required
• good interpersonal skills
• ability to be team players and learn and work in co-operation with both national and expat colleagues
• willingness to teach and demonstrate curative, preventive, and promotive nursing care in varied patient settings (eg: operating theatre, wards, and out patient department)
• willingness to provide training and capacity building for national nurses
• willingness to assist as needed with inventory, ordering, data base, budgeting, reporting, personnel management, development of training & work materials, assist with the development & implementation of long range program plans
• willingness to learn a foreign language
• an attitude of serving that is highly motivated, but even tempered
• creativity, and be innovative, organised, flexible, good follow through, reliable
• compassion for the poor and disabled
