Paul and Cathy Sampson

Missionary From New South Wales
Location: Kenya

The global Christian picture is changing rapidly. Today, some 45% of Kenyans claim to be Protestant Christians. The church in Kenya continues to grow and one of the many challenges it faces is a lack of opportunities to receive formal training in understanding and teaching the Bible.

Carlile College
Carlile Bible College in Nairobi is committed to mission and evangelism training, primarily for Anglican students from across East Africa. It was started in 1958 with only eight students and it has since grown to a capacity of 100 students and some 16 full-time and part-time lecturers. Carlile College has also established a Centre for Urban Mission located in Kibera, one of the world’s largest slum communities, on the outskirts of Nairobi. It has an extensive training program to prepare ministers to serve the fast-growing urban populations of Africa.

Paul and Cathy’s ministries
Paul’s role at Carlile will be to introduce, teach and promote the Moore Theological College Preliminary Theological Certificate (PTC) course. He has previously taught two subjects of the PTC in rural Kenya and has seen the great potential this course has to equip ministers to better understand and teach the Bible. The longer-term aim will be to see the PTC systematically taught across Africa.

The Sampsons will initially spend time studying Swahili before beginning ministry in Nairobi. Whilst Carlile College operates in English, much of the rest of East Africa uses Swahili. Paul and Cathy are praying that God will bless their language learning, and will open up other ministry opportunities through their growing fluency in Swahili.

Cathy hopes to use her experience in music and music education to minister alongside Paul, possibly through work in Kibera or at one of the Nairobi schools.

Your role as a mission partner
Paul and Cathy will be relying on their supporters back in Australia to pray and care for them, and to give financially to keep them on location. They would love you to be part of their team!
