Most of us love to watch a good DVD – an action flick, a romantic comedy, the occasional documentary. But there are some DVDs out there that will give you much more than a couple of hours of entertainment...and you can rent them for free!
CMS has a great DVD library stocked with over 100 different titles. These DVDs spotlight the work of God’s people around the world, as they proclaim Christ, serve the church, and live lives of grace.
CMS supporters can borrow DVDs to learn more about global mission, or to use in Bible study groups, church services, prayer meetings, or youth groups. Some of the films run for only 30 seconds, while others are in ten minute segments, so there’s a film in the CMS library for everyone – from those with limited time through to those who are looking to explore the issues surrounding God’s mission in more depth.
What's on offer?
CMS missionary snapshots
Most of the CMS missionaries who are currently on the field have a DVD giving their supporters back home an insight into what their ministries involve as well as what life is like in their location. So, you can get a bird’s eye view of evangelism in Tanzania with CMS missionary Liz Burns, or visit an Italian university campus with Andrew Lubbock, or have a chat with Peter and Lyndy Berthon about ministering to Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory...it’s up to you!
These videos are a great resource for churches that are partnering with particular CMS missionaries, helping congregations to get to know their link missionaries better and to get a feel for what they’re doing on location.
The ‘Fireside Chat’ series
If you’re interested in finding out more about becoming a missionary yourself, or in thinking through the challenges of the Great Commission, the ‘Fireside Chat’ DVDs are for you. This series presents frank discussions with missionaries about the ins and outs of mission service, giving practical advice for mission inquirers. For instance, CMS missionary Kylie Whitten talks about the process she and her husband Ralph went through in deciding to go to Spain, while missionary to France Sandra King confronts unhelpful stereotypes in explaining why missionaries aren’t ‘super spiritual’ Christians.
Supporting mission through CMS
CMS also has a general collection of DVDs designed to help CMS supporters and link churches to grow in their commitment to God’s global mission. These videos explain who CMS is and what it is that we do as a society. They canvas our strategic areas of ministry and encourage us all to play our different parts in God’s mission – whether by praying, caring for missionaries practically and financially, or even becoming missionaries ourselves.
Not only this, but the library has a selection of Bible and mission talks from past Summer Schools. These videos are compelling viewing for any Christian who desires to be globally-minded.
So next time you’re thinking about getting out the popcorn and settling down in front of the telly with a good DVD, or planning what you’ll do with your Bible study group or youth group, remember that there’s a treasure trove of mission DVDs just waiting for you to explore!
