Myanmar became independent from the British Commonwealth in 1948. It has been plagued by many political and economic problems since independence, result in its alienation from the international community. Myanmar is one of the poorest and least developed countries in Asia.

Approximately 70% of the population lives in rural areas, and public funding for health and education is among the lowest in the world. Myanmar is now opening back up to the international community and development and foreign investment is rapidly increasing.
