Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. There is widespread poverty in Bangladesh but in recent years population growth has reduced and access to essential services increased.

Formally a part of Pakistan, Bangladesh had its beginnings in 1971 following a bitter war. Military rule was established until 1990 when democracy was restored, however there is still much political instability. The country is subject to much flooding and cyclones and is due to be one of the worst affected areas should predicted sea level rises occur.
