Description
The Federation of Malaya gained independence from Britain in 1957 and in 1963, Sabah and Sarawak joined to form Malaysia.
Malaysia has experienced vigorous economic growth since independence, especially during the 1990s.
Around half the population are Malay and a quarter are Chinese. There are also significant groups of Indian and Tribal peoples.
Sunni Islam is the official religion in Peninsular Malaysia.
Sabah
Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is expanding rapidly and is home to a growing and vibrant church. Around a third of the population are Christians in Sabah, a much higher proportion than in Peninsular Malaysia.
