Once a leading civilisation, in the 19th and 20th centuries, China experienced civil unrest, famine, military defeats, and foreign occupation.

Following WWII, China's sovereignty was ensured through communist rule under MAO Zedong however the socialist system imposed strict controls over Chinese peoples everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people.

After 1978, Chinese leaders focused on market-oriented economic development which meant that much of the populations living standards improved, as did personal choice. Since the early 1990s, China has increased its global outreach and participation in international organisations including inclusion on the United Nations Security Council.
