D.I.Y.
Aim:
DIY is a section for youth leaders. It's basically a whole youth group session set out ready for you to run yourselves.
The aim of this youth group session is to excite your youth group to be the next generation that spearheads God's mission to the world.
Step One: Bible talk.
Bible passage: Luke 24:36-53.
You know how to best communicate with your youth group, but here are some suggested main points from the passage:
1. When you have big news, you don't keep it to yourself do you. Think about how hard it is to keep a secret, when someone tells you some really juicy information you want to share it.
2. The disciples have some big news to share. They saw Jesus die and they saw him buried, but now he's suddenly popping up amongst them, talking, eating, and feeling. He is alive!
3. This is not news the disciples should keep to themselves! And Jesus even tells them what the news is, “repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.”
4. Jesus says to His disciples “you are witnesses of these things”, and those witnesses have passed the secret onto us. This is a secret we should share.
Step Two: Discussion questions.
Discussing the Bible passage in small groups helps your youth group kids to think through for themselves what the passage means and what impact it should have for them.
Here are some suggested questions:
1. What is the significance of Jesus rising from the dead?
2. What things did Jesus want the disciples to teach?
3. How did he make it possible for them to teach these things? (You might want to look especially at verses 45 and 49).
4. Who does Jesus want them to speak to about him?
5. Does this message from Jesus apply to us today? If so, why?
Step Three: Activities.
The main aim of activities is to help drive home aspects of the Bible talk and discussion, so there are a few games you could play.
1. You could play a big game of Chinese Whispers. Break the group into smaller groups and give them each a sentence to whisper onwards. The sentences make up a larger paragraph. “Jesus came to suffer and rise from the dead. Repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in Jesus name. The disciples were witnesses and should take the message all over the world. Jesus gave them the Promise of His Father.” The last person from each group should recite their portion of the secret and see how far you get with the whole secret.
2. You could also play a game to reinforce the “go” part of the message based on unreached people groups. Separate the kids into teams and the team gets a point for every correct answer for e.g.
a) How many Muslims live in Indonesia? (196, 282, 000).
b) Is Cameroon in South America or Africa? (Africa).
c) How many unreached people groups are there in China?
i) over 100? ii) over 1, 000? (ii).
You might like to go to country profiles and have a look through the country lists for further questions you could ask.
