FAQs on going short-term with CMS

Is it possible to serve short-term with CMS?

Yes! We have many who serve with CMS is this way. Personnel who serve short-term and/or have limited theological or cross-cultural training are categorised in CMS as affiliates.

How long is short-term?

Between three months and two years. (The average is about 12 months.)

What do short-termers do?

Anything from teaching in English, to exercising professional skills in hospitals, churches, theological colleges, relief programs and/or add to the ministries of local organisations which are in partnership with CMS Australia.

Where can short-termers go?

CMS works in all kinds of ministries in over 35 different countries – there are potential short-term opportunities all over the world.

Why should I go with CMS?

CMS-Australia has been sending missionaries for almost 200 years. We have an excellent track record in looking after people and working sensitively in partnership with national churches.

What do I need to do?

Firstly you must be a committed Christian who agrees with the CMS principles and object (What are the principles and object of CMS?). You must also have been a member of CMS for at least 12 months.

As an affiliate, serving short-term, you need to be professionally qualified in your area of service and preferably have experience in your field. SEOs require documentation from their place of study.

Following a meeting with your CMS branch you will go through an application process, including forms, references, police check, medical clearance and interviews.

All short-term positions with CMS are self-funded.

What will CMS do?

After prayerfully considering your application, CMS will work with you to determine your location and the type of work you will do, and help you with visa applications and medical checks.

Before you leave CMS can provide information about hosting a fundraising/information event and help arrange a commissioning service at your church. If you plan to be away longer than 12 months, CMS will produce a prayer card.

While you are away CMS will include your prayer points in monthly prayer updates. Literally thousands of CMS members around Australia will be praying for you.

Do I have to do any cultural or Bible training?

CMS works in conjunction with Missions Interlink to provide quality training which is necessary for Affiliates. Whilst an Affiliate will have some theological foundation they are not usually required to have formal theological training unless they are going to a church-based situation.

What about language training?

Most affiliates go to locations where they can work in English. If you already have another language we will try to make use of that.

Will I get to share the gospel with anyone?

Yes, God willing. By being open to the needs around you, affiliates can develop relationships within which you can share your faith.

What about when I come back?

Your view of the world will be very different and it might take some time to readjust. This is called reverse culture shock. When you return you will have a debrief and the opportunity to speak with others about your experience.
